Pitch Range
Plays E4 to G7, fully chromatic
- G Major basic scale of 23 notes (3 1/4 octaves)
- 39 total notes when counting all sharps and flats
The Cirrus is a new and unique design by Song Wei, featuring a full 3 octaves (not counting first chamber subholes), achieved as follows:
1) 3rd chamber pinkie hole converted to a full diatonic note, as opposed to a standard Asian triple which uses this pinkie hole to play the G#6. The Cirrus adds a subhole on the 3rd chamber middle finger to play the G#6.
2) A single thumbhole on the 3rd chamber extends the range by one diatonic to an F#7.
3) After all 3rd chamber holes are uncovered, the pinkie and ring finger holes are simultaneously covered to play the high G7. This "over-blow" note requires no significant increase in breath pressure, and provides a sound quality identical to the notes below it.
Other features of the Cirrus
- Oak Leaf styling
- F#/G hole (highest hole of the 2nd chamber) moved to the underside of the ocarina, to be covered by the right thumb. Often referred to as "Japanese fingering" or "Osawa fingering".
- The Cirrus is available in the bass key of C, as well as in alto C, G, and F.
