Pitch Range
Plays A3 to D7, fully chromatic
- C Major basic scale of 25 notes (3 3/8 octaves)
- 50 total notes when counting all sharps and flats
The Stratus Triple BC achieves maximum range for a triple by taking full advantage of the potential range in the second and third chambers, as follows:
- 2nd chamber. The slide cover index finger holes are retained. But then a thumbhole is added to the underside, adding one additional diatonic note. The second chamber now goes to D, instead of stopping at C.
- 3rd chamber. The pinkie hole is converted to a full diatonic note, instead of playing a half-tone, as in traditional Asian triples. The D# is played by adding a subhole at the middle finger position. This modification adds a second full note to the ocarina's range. Note that the 3rd chamber now starts on an E (not counting the subhole), making the 3rd chamber fingering identical to that of the 2nd chamber.
- 3rd chamber. A hole is added at the index finger position, creating a slide cover configuration as with the 2nd chamber. This gives the Stratus its 3rd additional diatonic note.
- 3rd chamber. A thumbhole is added, providing the 4th additional diatonic note.
